Inventor estadounidense. Trabajó en la fábrica de textiles de su padre antes de hacerse marino, en 1830. En un viaje a India concibió la idea de su primer revólver, que más tarde patentó (1835–36). Las pistolas de seis tiros de Colt se demoraron en lograr aceptación, y su compañía establecida en Paterson, N.J., quebró en 1842. En 1843 inventó una mina marina con el primer explosivo accionado por control remoto y desarrolló un negocio telegráfico que usó el primer cable submarino. Los informes favorables de los soldados en la guerra mexicano-estadounidense impulsaron a que se colocara una orden por 1.000 pistolas, y Colt reinició la fabricación en 1847. Ayudado por Eli Whitney, Jr., anticipó el desarrollo de piezas intercambiables y de la línea de montaje. Su compañía, con base en Hartford, fabricó los revólveres más usados en la guerra de Secesión y en la colonización del Oeste, incluido el famoso Colt ..45.
